Canadian Ties

There was a special event at the hall in May when around 60 descendants of the Canadian Pronger/Taylor family arrived from British Columbia, and all over this country for a family reunion.

Josephine Pronger (nee Ryder) was brought up in the then Woodlands Children’s home in Chichester before a career in nursing. She met and married John Pronger, born in Staplefield, and they emigrated to British Columbia in 1968, where John eventually ended his career in the Royal Canadian Prison Service.

Josephine could remember the Canadian soldiers billeted in Sussex during WW2, and was keen to thank the people of Walberton for their part in welcoming the soldiers so far from home. A presentation took place, one to Mary Kendrick, for her help in arranging the reunion, and to the people of Walberton a beautiful Canadian national Flag, to be flown on Canada Day (1st July) as a gesture of thanks to those locally. They also gave Mary a number of pin badges to hand to those who were in the village during the war.  The accompanying card reads:

To the village of Walberton and Mary Kendrick, the Pronger-Taylor family
members thank you for the use of your hall that we may gather to honor (sic)
our ancestors. Also the Canadian members thank you on behalf of ALL Canadians
for taking care of our armed forces in WW2.

Please accept these pins and flag for the village – share the pins and fly the flag
with our thanks to all of you
